Six months after revealing his identity as Iron Man, the president of Stark Industries, Tony Stark has helped maintain world peace. He traces the Stark Expo in Flushing, New York, to continue the legacy of his father. A U.S. Senate committee, headed by Senator Stern tells Stark deliver the Iron Man technology for military applications. Stark rStark found that palladium in the reactor arc that keeps him alive is slowly poisoning. All his attempts to find a replacement element failed. While participating in a race in Monaco, Stark is attacked by Ivan Vanko, who built a miniature arc reactor to himself, including in the form of attachments to whip that uses electrical energy to turn them into weapon. After defeating the drones, the two fight against Vanko in his new armor. They beat it by using an explosion of their ray-repelling combined, but the armor of Vanko and drones proved to have been equipped with controls for self-destruction. As they begin to flee, Stark runs to save Pepper, rescuing it at the last minute. She resigned from his position as chairman, saying it was too stressful for her, and she and Stark finally kiss. Rhodes part with the Mark II armor, saying he intends to stay with her.

In an interview, Fury tells Stark that he is "inconselhável" for the "Avengers Initiative", the SHIELD want him as a consultant and wants the armor of Iron Man on the team with one person using it more advisable. Stark agrees on condition that he give Senator Stern and Colonel Rhodes with their medals of honor.

In the post-credits scene, agent of SHIELD Coulson Fury tells the phone, "We believe" that an impact crater in the desert of New Mexico contains Mjolnir, Thor's hammer.
